7 AM, Jacchia Square. Starting to set
up the event organized by the Department of Biology and the Faculty of
Sciences as part of the project "Researchers talking to the city". |
Inside the big pool, the scenario of the underwater volcano of Panarea
island will be reproduced. |
A
fundamental part is the lab work, for perfoming analyses and elaborating
collected data. |
Simone,
one of the divers, is getting ready...fortunately he is going to wear a
suit underwater! |
Splash!!! |
Attracted by the blue, the first
visitors approach. |
The Panarea experimental field: carbon
dioxyde emissions make the underwater volcano an ideal experimental
site. In fact, here the acidity values are the one expected by the end
of the century. |
With a little experiment, Valentina,
Michela e Fiorella show to kids and parents the effects of acidification
on the skeletons of different marine organisms.
It's early in the morning, but there is a lot of people yet! |
The kids stick to the glass, Erik is
showing them the instruments of the scientific diver.
Why should one waste this huge
pool without sharing with everyone the emotions of bubbling underwater???!!!
Serena, get 'em in the water!! :) |
Simone and Erik are ready to welcome
our first little scuba diver. |
Some basic advice and then...let's go
down! |
Giorgia and Valentina at the
microscopes show the studied organism. |
Meanwhile, the introductory dives go
on. |
Marta and Andrea are the Heads of the
info point. |
For the youngest ones it's too early,
but Simone knows how to entertain them by sticking out his tongue! |
It's getting dark and the first day is
over. |
A nice sunshine salutes us in the
morning and our researchers are ready to start again! |
If only there was no glass... |
Also today many kids arrived. |
The lab is fully running... |
...and the queue for the scuba
experience is long! |
Giorgia,
Serena and Joe, divemasters for one day! |
Strategies to fight the heat: someone
gets in the water like Caterina, and someone gets a fresh beer from the
net like Stefano. |
Some relax before starting again. |

Real time press release! |

Valentina
very satisfied by the day. |
Martina
and Matteo, two newbies of the underwater world. |
For the great event, also Stefano's mom arrives, and she cannot resist
to see the pool from above. |
There's still a lot of people, but the
closing time has come. |
Another couple of "introductories" and
then everybody out of the water... |
...and for those who could not dive,
don't panic, we wait you at the pool! |
We start to set things up, and our
crater becomes a nice dinghy!!! |
At 2:00 AM, also the pool goes away.
Event abstract: two intense days of environmental education, sport and
fun in close contact with the citizens, over 80 free scuba trials. A
success made possible by the collaboration of many enthusiastic people.
Thanks! |
